Hey – I’m Walt and I thank you for visiting and taking the time to learn more about me and LandLord PT. I am currently 34 years old, live in PA area outside Philadelphia and have been investing in Real Estate part time since I was 27.
I work full time in the technology field, I like to think of myself as a technology generalist. (This is me to the left while in the matrix also know as the datacenter) It’s your typical 9-5 corporate job. I have a growing family, which means everything to me. I am also a Christian and believe in integrity and treating people with respect part of the secret to my success as a landlord. I also like doing crazy things like this past fall signing up for an Ironman triathlon – 70.3 miles without ever riding a road bike before, or swimming in open water, all to make an overnight business trip worthwhile and get back in shape. It’s not every day I get to travel so I wanted to get the most excitement possible while away from home. I have three kids, as well as an awesome supportive wife and am lightly involved with some kids programs at church. Not much time for anything else on the hobby front.
How Did I Get Into This?
When I was younger in High School and early college my father and sister were reading a book together called Rich Dad Poor Dad. I picked it up to see what it was all about, and it really changed my perspective on how I view money. My dad was an accountant and of course loved talking about business and finance whenever possible, thus began the start of some very special bonding and learning. He was also a small business owner and did taxes for people.
My father passed away when I was in my late 20’s which was devastating. Even in my college years we would find the time to talk each day multiple times, he even bought an 800 number for his home phone so I could call anytime from anywhere; usually the pay phone on campus. Ah yes – we were late bloomers of the cell phone revolution. This was 2003, the pre-smartphone era.
I had also made a friend at church who was about 13 years older than me, a very successful investor and business person. I looked up to him in that he had several properties and seemed to have unlocked some of the secrets I was after regarding investing and real estate. He also happened to be a real estate broker and have the inside track to what was going on in our local market.
From this point forward, I decided to use my life long savings and stock/money market investments to buy real estate, know by bankers as “real property.” I knew it would be more work than just picking a fund or researching a stock, BUT I also knew the benefits were greater and the reward was greater. Admittedly, I didn’t know all the answers….still don’t.
